The Speaker Pro Tem of the Louisiana House has decided not to run for re-election, ending his legislative career after eight years. Houma Representative Tanner Magee says he has 14-year-old triplets, plus he calls the political atmosphere at the capitol toxic.
“It’s moving more in a direction of a D.C. style and I don’t want to spend the next four years missing my kids and being away from family and not really enjoying the process,” said Magee.
The 42-year-old Magee says Washington D.C. partisan attacks have become too much.
“Much of my class, people I came in with, really are not there anymore, it’s dwindling down, I miss them and I am going to miss them in the future, but it’s really changed,” said Magee.
Magee says he’s proud to help secure funds for rural roads and flood control projects in his district. But he says special interest groups have gained too much control.
“They are more interested in recording how you vote, then they are passing meaningful legislation that will help people in Louisiana, because for them politics is just a game,” said Magee.
