A new study finds a correlation between consuming alcohol and high blood pressure. Co-author of the study Dr. Paul Whelton at Tulane University said the observational study of 20,000 participants conducted over a 24-year period found a direct connection and that even one beer a day can increase your BP.
“And the more intake the higher the level of blood pressure associated. It’s more or less a linear relationship,” said Whelton.
Whelton said the findings aren’t terribly surprising, the more you drink the more your blood pressure increases.
“But it does tell us what we’ve always said, if you’re not drinking don’t start and the World Health Organization, in their guidelines would say just don’t drink it’s as simple as that,” said Whelton.
In case you’re wondering if wine has less of an impact than liquor, Whelton said when it comes to alcohol…
“I think it’s pretty clear now it doesn’t really matter how you get alcohol it has the same effect whether it’s in wine, beer, spirits, etc.,” said Whelton.
