Acadian Ambulance is recruiting students for its National EMS Academy which provides credentials for EMTs and paramedics in the face of workforce shortages. Director of Operations in LA and MS Porter Taylor says there are plenty of opportunities.
“We have a lot of options in our company. As far as areas worked, we have an offshore division. We have a safety division. We have an alarm division. And of course we have our ground and air division.”
Acadian has training sites in Louisiana, Texas, and Mississippi. In Louisiana, training sites include Houma, New Orleans, Lafayette, Covington, Lake Charles, and Alexandria. Taylor says paramedic students can choose their level of coursework.
“The accelerated is everyday, Monday through Friday which takes about six months to complete. Whereas the traditional, you’re still working a typical schedule and doing your school work on your days off. That route takes about 14 months.”
First responders must be pass a certified test. Taylor says the training can be applied to college coursework to earn an associate’s degree.
“We’ll start them at the EMR, emergency medical responder level. That takes about two weeks. We’ll hire them on right away. You have to be 18 years old with a valid drivers license. And then also move them towards the EMT class.”
The next course is scheduled to start August 7. For more information go to becomeamedic.com.
