For the first time since LSU made wearing the number “7” jersey a thing, an offensive lineman will be the one with a seven on his uniform.
Starting left tackle Will Campbell has been awarded the coveted jersey number. Since he is an offensive lineman, NCAA rules do not allow O-Linemen to have a single-digit number, so he’ll have a patch instead.
Campbell looks like a future first-round NFL draft pick. He was a freshman All-American last season as he made 13 starts. He was whistled for only one penalty and allowed just three sacks.
“The No. 7 jersey tradition is unique and special to this program and worn by some of the greatest players to wear the Purple and Gold. We want to build upon that tradition and honor the best player on our team who is from the state of Louisiana, ” said Coach Brian Kelly.
Campbell is from Monroe and was a standout player at Neville High School. He began the 2022 season as the starter a left tackle and never looked back.
“Campbell has made such an impact on our team in such a short time and embodies the qualities to join the legacy of the players that have come before him,” said Kelly.
The number seven jersey tradition started with cornerback Patrick Peterson in 2010. It usually goes to a skill position player on offense or a defensive back.
The other jersey of note is number 18 and defensive tackle Mehki Wingo will wear that number. It goes to the player that excels not only on the field but off the football field as well.
Wingo anchored LSU’s defensive line last season after transferring in from Missouri. He started 13 games and made 47 tackles, six tackles for a loss, three sacks, and a forced fumble.
He’s one of five LSU representatives on the SEC Student-Athlete Leadership Council. He’s also known to be very active in the community, helping with the Baton Rouge Food Bank, at the domestic violence shelter, and the Boys and Girls Club.
