The New Orleans Saints have reportedly traded Wil Lutz to the Denver Broncos for a 2024 7th-round pick. The Black and Gold have decided to go with undrafted free-agent kicker Blake Grupe instead.
“Obviously there’s a lot of confidence there when it comes to Blake Grupe and that’s what led to the trade of Wil Lutz, reuniting him with the Denver Broncos. Less about the money factor or anything like that, more about the confidence in the young led,” host of the Locked on Saints Podcast Ross Jackson said.
Lutz has been with the team since 2016, but Grupe was brought in as an undrafted free agent out of Notre Dame. Lutz was expected to be the kicker going into the offseason, but Grupe’s success was hard to pass up.
“Grupe did a lot of help for himself by nailing that 30-yarder and a 50-yarder in the preseason game,” Jackson said.
Cornerback Bradley Roby was waived by the Saints on Tuesday and is expected to be replaced by second-year corner Alontae Taylor at the slot corner position.
Taylor and Paulson Adebo have been competing for the second press corner position, but now both will be on the field for the Saints, and it cost Roby his spot on the roster.
“We see these kinds of surprising moves all the time when it comes to roster cuts. Especially with veterans who are already vested and don’t have to go through waiver priority and things like that,” Jackson said.
The Saints start their season on Sunday, Sept. 10 in New Orleans against the Tennessee Titans.
