State police have released more information on the officer-involved shooting that took place Saturday in Vinton. Trooper Derek Senegal says it all started when Cameron Parish Sheriff Deputies attempted a traffic stop on a vehicle driven by a man from Texas.
“The suspect was later identified as Spencer J. Wilson of Jacksonville, Texas and there was gunfire at that point then a pursuit ensured.”
34-year-old Spencer Wilson led a pursuit northbound on LA 27 and passed through several streets in Carlyss and Sulphur. Senegal says at the intersection of Gum Island Road and LA 108, Wilson traveled off the roadway and struck a ditch.
“After the vehicle crashed, they located the female that was a passenger inside of that vehicle.”
Wilson then exited the vehicle towards a nearby open field firing at officers with a fully automatic rifle. Senegal says at least five officers returned fire.
“There were no reports of that female being injured or anybody else other than the Sulphur police officer that sustained a non-life threatening gunshot wound.”
Wilson died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. The officer was treated and released.
