Narcan, a drug used to reverse opioid overdoses, will be available without a prescription on Wednesday. LSU Health New Orleans Chief of Community and Population Medicine Dr. Benjamin Springgate said Narcan is an important tool to counter the opioid overdose epidemic, but the cost could be a factor.
“There are opportunities to receive distribution from sometimes fire stations, or other public-facing health facilities. But it’s definitely going to be a challenge for people to come up with $45 and pay that out of pocket.
The suggested retail is $45 a carton which contains two doses of nasal spray.
While Springgate admits he’s not sure if over-the-counter availability of Narcan will make a dramatic difference…
“I think every opportunity to increase the availability of Narcan is going to make some difference, and I think that we want to look at is as another tool in the toolkit but it’s not a cure-all,” said Springgate.
Some health insurers will cover the cost, or a portion of it when it’s prescribed. Besides individuals who are at most risk for an overdose, Springgate said others should also consider purchasing Narcan.
“If you have someone in your life who’s potentially going to be at risk for overdose, they’re using drugs, you’re not sure which drugs, it’s worth some on hand,” said Springgate.
If you do have to administer Narcan, know that vomiting or seizure-like activity is a potential side effect. So, roll the person on their side to prevent choking, call 9-1-1, and stay with them until help arrives.
