The investigation continues today into Tuesday’s fatal shooting at a high school in Greensburg. Joe Chaney with the St. Helena Parish Sheriff’s Office says a student started shooting in the parking lot at St. Helena College and Career Academy. A motive is not known.
The gunman, a 14-year-old boy, was taken into custody and Chaney says he’s facing several charges, including second-degree murder, aggravated second-degree battery, illegal possession of a firearm and in a firearm free zone.
A relative has identified the deceased victim as 16-year-old Vernon Gordon a football player. Chaney says the shooting has left St. Helena Parish stunned.
“Everyone is amazed to see this happen in our local schools,” said Chaney.
School is canceled for Wednesday and Thursday. Grief counselors will be on hand when classes resume on Friday. St. Helena’s football game on Friday night against Amite has been canceled.
