US Senator Bill Cassidy (R)
Louisiana Republican U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy is a co-author of a bill that would gradually raise the federal minimum wage to eleven dollars an hour. Cassidy says its time to have a responsible conversation about to increase the minimum wage for American workers.
“A friend of mine has a bunch of Burger Kings and he says he’s not getting anybody for less than $12 to $15 so we have to recognize that the market has increased,” said Cassidy.
Cassidy also supported legislation in 2021 to raise the minimum wage to $10 an hour, but the Democratic-controlled Senate didn’t think it was high enough. Cassidy says it’s time to try again as lower income Americans are hurt by inflation, which he blames on President Biden.
“Recognizes under Biden’s inflationary prices it’s been very difficult for families to keep up,” said Cassidy.
Congress has not raised the federal minimum wage since 2007. Democrats in the Senate have filed a bill that would raise the federal minimum wage to $17 an hour by 2028. Cassidy that’s not achievable.
“Some in the far left will not accept this and I would argue that you can’t let your vision of the perfect to be an enemy of the good,” said Cassidy.
The federal minimum wage has not been increased since 2007.
