The Louisiana State Fire Marshal is modifying the statewide burn ban. State Fire Marshal Office spokesperson Ashley Rodrigue says the biggest change is that each parish will be able to opt out based on moisture levels and the threat of wildfires.
“We’re starting to get more into a varied experience with the weather. And so they’ve decided to have this opportunity to give it to the locals and let them decide what is possible and what is attainable in their areas.”
Louisiana first issued its statewide burn ban on August 7th and re-issued it on August 25th.
The active burn ban prohibits all private burnings with no limitations. Rodrigues says one of the new modifications.
“Allows for the parishes to opt out of the statewide burn if they feel that is the place that they’re in.”
The reissued modifications also provide for fire chiefs to resume granting burn permissions on a case-by-case basis.
Rodrigue says even if your parish decides to opt out of the burn ban continue to keep safety first. And for those parishes that remain under the state burn ban.
“Still follow that burn ban. Don’t burn anything, especially those open flames that are firepits, campfires, burnfires, burn piles, as well as just taking normal precautions as it pertains to outdoor cooking.”
The new modified order goes into effect Friday at 5 PM.
