Louisiana Citizens policyholders seeking financial assistance to fortify their roof against wind damage can apply for a grant of up to ten-thousand dollars at noon today. 500 grants were made available two weeks ago and it took over two minutes before they were gone. Insurance Commissioner Jim Donelon says interested homeowners should register before the grants are made available…
“Get yourself established with your domain because if you have to do that before you submit your application you’ll probably going to be behind a lot of other folks.”
There’s a link to register for the Louisiana Fortify Homes Program on the Department of Insurance’s homepage. Donelon says the program will provide grants of up to 10-thousand dollars for homeowners to repair or replace their roofs to the Fortified Roof standard.
He says Citizens policyholders only eligible for the grants that will be awarded today, the homeowners with private insurance will be eligible for the next round of grants that will be handed out…
“We’ll have 15 hundred left and we’ll start making those 15 hundred available after Monday to the public at large.”
Besides being a Citizens policyholder, Donelon says there are a couple of other qualifications needed in order to be eligible for the grants that will be distributed today…
“You have to have a homestead exemption. Another is you have to have a wind policy for protection against wind events on your property.”
Donelon homeowners who live in a FEMA-declared flood zone, you also must have flood insurance in order to be eligible for the fortify roofing grant.
