Republican Jeff Landry winning the governor’s race in the primary was a surprise as political observers expected a November run-off. JMC Analytics Pollster John Couvillon says Landry’s tough on crime message connected with the 547-thousand people who voted for him
“Jeff ran a focused disciplined campaign that was talking about crime and his humble beginnings which to me was far more focused and coherent than anything his Republican opponents could offer.”
Couvillon says Landry receiving 12 percent of the Black vote in African-American-dominated precincts was also a big key in Saturday’s victory. He says that’s unprecedented for a white candidate in a statewide race to receive that much support from Black voters…
“That number was closer to 20 percent in Acadiana but more importantly the 12 percent to me was of the fact that he ran a very focused campaign on crime.”
Voter turnout was just 36-percent. Couvillon says Landry had the support of the Republican Party and the anti-voting Landry bloc was not motivated…
“The lower turnout was indicative of the fact that voters who perhaps were on the fence about didn’t find anything offensive enough to physically go to the polls to vote against him.”
