The state treasurer’s race is in a runoff between Republican John Fleming and Democrat Dustin Granger. Fleming previously served four terms in Congress and worked in the Trump administration. He’s also a physician and a businessman and says he wants to use his experience as a businessman to improve the state’s economy…
“With the proper budgeting and lowering taxes, lowering regulations, getting out of the way of business creation so we can bring back jobs to Louisiana.”
Granger is a financial advisor from Lake Charles. He says Louisiana’s economy does not work because it gives tax breaks to big businesses…
“Leads to all these budget crunches where they end up cutting investments in people like health and education and infrastructure and it’s like a constant downward ratchet down and it’s a vicious cycle.”
Granger says as State Treasurer he also wants to improve the state’s unclaimed property program, work with the Insurance Commissioner on fixing the state’s insurance crisis and he also wants to help revitalize small towns…
“I remember going to my great aunt’s and uncle’s houses…you know catfish couvillion cooking. And thriving communities and festivals. And now when I go to a lot of those small communities they’re boarded up, shut down, people have left.”
Fleming also believes the State Treasurer can take on a larger role than just protecting the state’s revenues…
“We desperately need in our state economic development. We need to bring down insurance rates and I believe that the treasurer could be a fundamental part of that team.”
