Republican Liz Murrill and Democrat Lindsey Cheek are in a run-off seeking to become the state’s first female Attorney General. Murrill won the primary, receiving 45-percent of the vote. Murrill has spent the last six years as the state’s Solicitor General, defending Louisiana and its laws in federal and state court.
“I have proven track record of defending our constitutional rights and defending our people and have a lot of experience as a lawyer as a mother, a wife and great fighter for our state,” said Murrill.
Based on the last campaign finance report filed, Murrill had nearly a million dollars in campaign cash on hand. Cheek, an attorney from New Orleans, only had about $100,000, but says that will not stop her from getting her message out.
“This race is not about big checks, it’s about the people of Louisiana,” said Cheek. “We probably shocked some of the state’s insiders by my advancing from the primary, but we are actively raising the resources we need to win in November.”
Murrill says she has several lawsuits pending against the Biden Administration in federal court and she says having current Attorney General Jeff Landry moving into the governor’s mansion will make their cases stronger.
“To help me bring back to the courts to show how these policies hurt us or how much they cost us, I mean that’s just an enormous advantage for me,” said Murrill.
Cheek says with a hard line Republican taking over as governor, it would be good to have a Democrat as the state’s next Attorney General.
“The Attorney General needs to be somebody who can keep Jeff Landry in check and work with him to make sure that nobody is making any far right or far left extreme decisions that can hurt the people of Louisiana,” said Cheek.
The election is November 18th.
