Ronnie Caldwell, Junior, Northwestern State University football player who was killed October 12, 2023.
Attorneys representing the family of Ronnie Caldwell say they are seeking justice and accountability. A wrongful death lawsuit has been filed against Northwestern State and the owners of The Quad apartments where the football player was gunned down on October 12th.
“It’s a call to action for parents and also for the school to do whatever they can to protect their students. No one should die in pursuit of an education,” said Attorney Helen Daniel.
Three days before he was shot 21-year-old Caldwell told his parents that his roommate, 27-year-old John McIntosh, threatened him with a gun. His father asked coach Brad Laird to move his son to a safe location but that never happened. Attorney Johnathan Cox said they want to know if Campus Advantage ran a background check on McIntosh for the safety of Caldwell and other residents at the complex.
“We’re asking all of those questions to determine what was done and what wasn’t done,” said Cox.
The lawsuit is seeking damages, and funeral expenses and has requested a trial by jury. Cox said Caldwell and his parents asked for help and failure to act resulted in his death.
Audio Player“It’s just heartbreaking to know the school and the apartment both were put on notice, nothing was done, and those are the answers we’re seeking,” said Cox.
Laird resigned from his coaching position and NSU canceled the remainder of the football season after Caldwell’s death.
The Caldwell family is represented by Daniel Williams & Associates and the Cox Pradia Law Firm.
