Governor-elect Jeff Landry appoints the first Black woman to head the Department of Environmental Quality. The appointment of Aurelia Skipwith Giacometto is also his first cabinet appointment. Giacometto served as Director of U.S. Fish and Wildlife under former President Trump.
“This is an absolutely historic appointment, for a number of reasons, and I think most importantly the exciting part is that we’re already assuring that we can attract people with the caliber that Aurelia has to the State of Louisiana,” said Landry.
The Indiana native began her career at Monsanto as a lab tech and in addition to a biology degree from Howard, and a master’s in molecular genetics from Purdue, she has a law degree from the University of Kentucky.
Landry said her appointment will attract others to the state.
“We all know we have an outward migration problem, and we’re trying to fix that, and to do that we want to attract people to come to our state, and that’s exactly why I chose Aurelia to lead the Department of Environmental Quality,” said Landry.
After leaving her federal appointment with U.S. Fish and Wildlife, Landry said Giacometto returned to the private sector and became an advisor…
“On pre-commercial development of coal-based carbon advanced products and works. Working to ensure that Louisiana leads on reliable energy,” said Landry.
Landry made the announcement from his transition team headquarters at the University of Louisiana Lafayette.
