Turkey Creek Senator Heather Cloud is disturbed by the latest episode of violent behavior by juvenile inmates at the Monroe Swanson Center for Youth. Cloud says three of the teen offenders involved in this attempted escape and violent attack were previously held at a facility at Angola.
“They broke cameras, they stole the radio from one of the correctional specialists, ultimately one of the juveniles climbed into the attic broke pipe out of the attic and attacked one of the juvenile officers,” said Cloud.
Cloud says another two juveniles involved, previously tried to escape a youth facility in Bunkie. The senator is upset federal judge Shelly Dick ruled Louisiana can not house juvenile offenders at Angola.
“There are certain juveniles that need to be in more secured confined placement is it going to take one of these officers actually dying, because many have come close,” said Cloud.
The state Office of Juvenile Justice set up an area at the Louisiana State Penitentiary to house some of the state’s most violent juvenile inmates. But a lawsuit resulted in Judge Dick determining the teens were held in inhumane conditions and not receiving rehabilitative services.
Cloud says she visited the Angola facility twice while youth offenders were there and disagrees with Judge Dick’s assessment. She says a federal appeals court will hear the case on December 5th.
