Chances are you’re among the 55.4 million Americans traveling 50 miles or greater for Thanksgiving. Triple A said it’s the third-highest Turkey Day travel forecast since 2000. Spokesperson Don Redman said just 2.3% more are traveling this year for their holiday feast.
“The bulk of those people who are traveling are going to be traveling by car, and regionally we’re seeing the same trends, in terms of they’re going to be more people on the road,” said Redman.
In Louisiana, gas prices are 32-cents lower than at this time last year, a statewide average of $2.83 a gallon for regular gasoline.
4.7 million travelers will take to the skies for Thanksgiving, an increase of 6.6% from last year. Redman said 4% more Louisiana residents are choosing to fly for the holiday this year.
“Even though the ticket prices are higher they just want to get to their vacation earlier and spend more time on vacation rather than behind the wheel,” said Redman.
Today is the busiest travel day for Thanksgiving and Redman said the sooner you start your journey better…
“Because once you get to that 11 o’clock, noon hour you’re talking about a lot of heavy traffic, especially around metropolitan areas. So, if you can head out early do so and the same thing can be said about the return trip Sunday,” said Redman.
Among the most popular out-of-state destinations for Louisiana residents this year are Orlando, Tennessee, Vegas, and New York.
