Today is Giving Tuesday – and the Humane Society of Louisiana is in need of help. Director Jeff Dorson says support is especially needed this time of year to provide food and warm shelter for vulnerable animals.
“And now’s a great time, especially in Louisiana where there’s very few services for animals, especially in the rural areas. In the northern part of the state, we get calls every day because we don’t have enough animal public shelters.”
Dorson says the society receives about five to 10 cruelty reports a day from anywhere in the state. He says in the past few days they found animals who needed essential medical care.
“A dog found with an open laceration that needed vet care. Another dog was hit by a car. People have this idea that someone going to step in and help. Often in Louisiana, there is no department assigned to helping stray animals.”
The society receives no government funding. While some parishes in Louisiana are without shelters, Dorson says only 30 of the 64 parishes don’t have animal control services. He says the shelter relies on donations so they can care for pets.
“What you’re doing is supporting a philosophy. What you get in return is a good feeling. You’ve done your part. You’re part of the solution. It’s a wonderful way of reminding ourselves what is this all about.”
