If you want to see the world’s tallest Christmas tree structure, just make your way toward north Louisiana to DeSoto Parish which now holds the world record with its 300-foot-tall tree structure. Sheriff Jayson Richardson says the idea hit him last year while looking at Christmas lights with his family.
“Got me to thinking, I wonder what the world’s largest Christmas tree is? And realized the current largest it was in Indiana. It was 280 some odd feet. Well, our tower was 300 feet so I knew we exceeded that.”
The 28-story tall structure is a communications tower covered with more than 10 thousand LED lights behind Stonewall Government Plaza. Transforming the tower into the $30 thousand “Spirit of DeSoto Tree” was paid for by donations from sponsors and donors.
Richardson says local businessman Perry Thompson helped bring the vision to life. He says construction of the massive festive structure began earlier this year.
“The tower is what we used to start the top and then we widen the bottom of the structure out so it looks like a Christmas tree.”
Richardson says the tree is lit from 6:30 pm to 10:30 pm every night. He says hundreds of people have already come to Stonewall to see the light setup.
“We do have people visiting nearly every day for pictures and all of that. And that’s what we wanted to do. It’s cool to see it come to fruition and the positivity that its created in the community.”
The Christmas display will remain lit until the first week of January.
