The Louisiana Department of Health said they met 91% of their 45 goals set for Fiscal Year 2023. Deputy Secretary Tonya Joiner said instead of having competing multiple goals they create a framework that allows them to concentrate on specific health issues for the year.
“I think just having that roadmap and framework to focus on lays the groundwork for everybody to know what we’re doing, focus on that and accomplish those goals,” said Joiner.
Among the biggest challenges facing the state are chronic diseases, maternal health, behavioral health, and overall access to quality healthcare. For maternal health, Joiner said focused on improving early childhood nutrition.
“We increased breastfeeding rates through the implementation of two of our policy changes and increased prenatal and infant participation in our Louisiana WIC program,” said Joiner.
Another goal that made great strides this year, is increasing access to behavioral health. With the launch of the 9-8-8 nationwide suicide and mental crisis hotline in July of 2022, Joiner said they wanted to make sure in-state callers are assisted by local counselors.
“And we’re working to maintain a 90% in-state call rate, to ensure residents are being assisted by those within Louisiana and so they are connected with Louisiana local resources when they make that call,” said Joiner.
Joiner said they also increased screening rates and risk assessments for chronic disease through outreach partners in the state.
