Attorney General-elect Liz Murrill announced the appointment of former federal prosecutor Ed O’Callahan to conduct an in-depth review of the practices and operations of state police. Louisiana State Police is under a US Department of Justice investigation following the 2019 death of Ronald Greene.
“Our office takes that matter very seriously. So, I will be conducting our own deep-dive and review of all the pertinent facts so that we’ll know best how to respond to this inquiry going forward,” said Murrill.
Murrill said O’Callahan is a long-time former federal prosecutor and former top official at the U.S. Department of Justice. She said O’Callahan and his team from the Washington DC law office of WilmerHale will guide the state in the ongoing USDOJ investigation.
“They will report to me and my top deputies as their work proceeds and they engage with USDOJ. We will work to ensure that LSP is the finest law enforcement agency in this country,” said Murrill.
Murrill, who’s the current Solicitor General, said because she respects and supports law enforcement an internal review of LSP is what’s best for the agency.
“I believe that this support is best demonstrated by conducting a top-to-bottom self-assessment of LSP. Including the policies, practices, and operations and providing guidance and the means to achieve lasting improvements,” said Murrill.
O’Callahan has conducted similar reviews of law enforcement agencies in Illinois, Maryland, and New York.
