“That Kid” from San Bernardino, California is the third LSU football player to win the Heisman trophy. Jayden Daniels received 501 of the 870 first-place votes to beat out Washington quarterback MIchael Penix Jr., Oregon quarterback Bo Nix, and Ohio State receiver Marvin Harrison Jr.
After three inconsistent years at Arizona State, Daniels transferred to LSU and blossomed into college football’s best player.
“I learned how to block out the noise that you can overcome any obstacle, and just be humble, be legendary and most importantly be joyful about what you do,” said Daniels. “And when you get knocked down, get back up, keep smiling and never give up on your dreams.”
Daniels had a season for the ages in 2023 as he nearly accumulated 5,000 total yards of offense. Daniels also led the nation in passing touchdowns with 40 and total touchdowns with 50.
He orchestrated one of the greatest offenses in LSU’s history. He wishes it could have led to more team success.
“I want to thank every single LSU fan for having my back, I’ve never seen fans pouring their hearts into a team like LSU, I really wish I could have brought you back another championship, that was my plan, but God has other plans for me,” said Daniels.
During his Heisman acceptance speech, Daniels thanked God, his parents, coaches, teammates, and everyone who helped him along his incredible journey.
The latest Heisman winner also says he’s a product of hard work and faith.
“They said I was too skinny , so I added weight, they said I relied on my legs a little bit too much, so I went to work to complete all of those passes and to have the season had, they said I was too quiet, so I became more vocal and I stepped out of my comfort zone and now I’m here where I’m at today,” said Daniels.
Daniels winning the Heisman completes a remarkable year for LSU athletics. Two national championships, Lady Tigers basketball and baseball. Tigers center fielder Dylan Crews was awarded the Golden Spikes Awarc which goes to the best college baseball player in baseball. Angel Reese has become one of the top female athletes in the country and now Daniels gets the trophy for best college football player.
Embrace it LSU fans, 2023 will be a year we’ll never forget.
