The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development headquarters in baton Rouge has a new name. The building has been named after P.B.S. Pinchback, Louisiana’s first Black Governor who served from 1872 to 1873. DOTD Secretary Eric Kalivoda says this is a move towards equitability not only for the city but for the state.
“We have a plaque on order which will go right inside the first set of glass doors to explain to people who PBS Pinchback is. So we’ll have that on there with a embossed image of his headshot of him.”
Kalivoda says the name designation in honor of Pinchback is well deserved.
“We’re glad to do it and glad to have a name for our building after all these years. It’s never been named for anyone. So it’s a good name. We’re honored to have him and we’re pleased to do this.”
Gonzales Senator Ed Price filed a bill in the last legislative session to name the building after Pinchback. He says he chose DOTD headquarters as the location.
“There were alot of infrastructure needs going on because of the war and so that’s why I chose the DOTD building because they deal with alot of infrastructure needs and I thought this was a perfect opportunity to do it.”
