Governor John Bel Edwards with moderator Jim Engster on his final episode of "Ask the Governor," December 13, 2023.
Governor John Bel Edwards held his last monthly call-in radio program Wednesday. He said it was when he was serving in the legislature and Governor Bobby Jindal was entering his second term that motivated him to seek the state’s highest office himself.
“I thought we were making some tremendous mistakes, disinvesting in our most critical priorities, particularly education and higher education. Really wanted to turn that around, I just believed that I could have more of an influence over the director of the state if I was governor,” said Edwards.
The state constitution does not allow a governor to serve more than two consecutive terms and when asked if he could have run for office again?
“I certainly would have run given the opportunity, that’s not something that was possible, and so quite frankly we are excited about going back home to Tangipahoa Parish. Being grandparents, and me resuming a law practice and we’re going to be just fine,” said Edwards.
Edwards and First Lady Donna Edwards will be grandparents for the first time in January. In addition to doting on the newest addition to their family, he said they’re also looking forward to like driving his classic 1966 Chevrolet truck, whenever and wherever they want.
“We’re excited about going out and driving. The other thing is we don’t have to schedule it way out in advance. If we just decide one afternoon that we want to go out and take a ride somewhere, we’re going to be able to do that,” said Edwards.
