If you plan to start the New Year with a bang, the State Fire Marshal’s Office wants to remind you of some simple tips regarding fireworks safety. Spokesperson Ashley Rodrigue says to make sure there are no fireworks restrictions in your parish.
“Make sure wherever it is you are planning to pop fireworks that it’s legal to do so. There are different roles, different laws in different parts of our state.”
Rodrigue says it’s best to attend a public display where professionals are handling the pyrotechnics. But if you are going to be purchasing fireworks…
“Make sure wherever you’re setting up your fireworks to be set off that it is at least 200 feet away from structures, people who are watching, vehicles, any type of environment or objects that are easily set ablaze.”
Rodrigue suggests having a water source nearby in case of any type of emergency or fire. Also, do not pop fireworks when impaired because it slows your reaction time. She reminds adults to never give children fireworks, even sparklers.
“Don’t allow children to play or use fireworks even with a parent present at all. It’s best to give them some alternative options like glow sticks or glow little items like necklaces and bracelets.”
