House Speaker and Louisiana Congressman Mike Johnson is urging President Biden and Senate Democrats to enforce policies along the U-S Mexico border. Johnson and House Republicans visited the Southern Border on Wednesday and he says the situation is bad.
“America is at a breaking point with record levels of illegal immigration and today we got a first-hand look at the damage and chaos the border catastrophe is having on all of our communities,” said Johnson.
Johnson made the remarks at a press conference in Eagle Pass, Texas on Wednesday afternoon. He says the lack of a strong border policy has resulted in lethal drugs pouring into the country and hundreds of terrorists have also entered the U.S.
Johnson believes the President should reinstitute a Trump-era policy of keeping migrants in Mexico until their U.S. immigration court date.
“It was estimated on our tour that if the Biden Administration would reinstate just the Remain in Mexico policy he can stem the flow by probably 70% or more,” said Johnson.
The Biden Administration is seeking 50-billion dollars in security assistance for Ukraine. But Johnson says House Republicans are not willing to spend that kind of money without a stringent border security policy.
“If President Biden wants a supplemental spending bill focused on national security it better begin by defending America’s national security,” said Johnson.
The White House has proposed more money to hire Border Patrol agents and asylum officers to reduce the number of illegal crossings. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer says Johnson’s trip to the border was an attempt to score political points. He urges the Congressman to negotiate in a bipartisan way.
