U.S. News and World Report once again ranked the DASH Diet, developed in part by LSU’s Pennington Biomedical Research Center, the second-best diet overall of 2024. Pennington Biomedical Registered Dietician Cathy Champagne says DASH was designed to lower blood pressure and the eating plan includes…
“Fruits and vegetables were the main thing. The fiber was very high. We focused on certain minerals. And the one thing that really makes the diet stand out is the main blood pressure lowering came from dairy products.”
Dash also came in first for the best heart-healthy diet, third for best diet for diabetes, and eighth for best weight loss. The diet has ranked in the top five overall of the publication for years. Champagnes says the plan has also proven effective in helping those with a history of heart disease.
“The American Heart Association says the DASH diet is their top diet because it fulfills every perimeter of a heart-healthy diet that is promoted by the Heart Association.”
The DASH plan also includes whole grains, poultry, nuts, and fish. But the diet calls for two major changes from the way most people eat – lowering red meat consumption, sweets, and sugars.
Champagne says the DASH diet is a proven plan for healthy eating and they are pleased with its long history.
“There’s no doubt about the fact that it is a well-researched diet and one that we’re particularly proud of because it was finalized at the Pennington Center.”
