Louisiana’s 57th Governor Jeff Landry officially takes over at noon Monday. Lapolitics.com publisher Jeremy Alford says Landry has been preparing for this moment since his election in October and will look to get a lot accomplished over the next few months
“What there is to expect is a very ambitious policy agenda for this first calendar year. Exactly what is on there? We know there’s a special session coming on crime and redistricting and of course the regular session.”
Alford also expects Landry to have a lot of success with his agenda because of a Republican supermajority in the House and Senate.
“He is more than likely going to get the speaker of the house that he wanted. The senate president that he wanted. And the are in return are probably going to give him chairmanships that he’s comfortable with.”
Metairie Republican Cameron Henry is expected to be elected as Senate President today. Eunice Republican Phillip DeVillier is expected to be elected as House Speaker.
A special session looking at how to reduce crime in Louisiana will be held in February and the regular legislative session starts in March. But Alford says Landry can begin signing executive orders this afternoon to put his stamp on the governor’s office.
“This man was Attorney General. He’s a smart attorney. He is an administrator. He doesn’t always necessarily like to play with others. So the executive order function it seems just tailor made for Jeff Landry to jump into and do some unique things with.”
The inauguration Ball is still set for tonight.
