Amazon, the leading global online retailer, is opening a 56 thousand square foot distribution facility in Monroe. Mayor of Monroe Friday Ellis says the facility will provide 200 job opportunities that will change outcomes for local families.
“We support a lot of economic activities. We support a lot of jobs for our surrounding communities so this has been an important investment not only for Monroe but for our region cause that’s how our people live.”
The facility will offer full and part time positions ranging between 17 to 28 dollars per hour.
Ellis says Amazon already operates more than a dozen facilities across the north and southeast region of the state. He says the location off interstate 20 corridor in the heart of the economic development district is the perfect site.
“Developments beget more developments. The I-20 district has already seen expansions and so there’s a lot of things happening in northeast Louisiana.”
The distribution plant will be located at the intersection of Luffey Drive and interstate 20 North Frontage Road and construction is expected to begin in the coming weeks. Ellis says this will also be a win for local small businesses.
“I’m looking for ways to be able to work with Amazon to talk about ways that our small logistics company can procure contracts for delivery and things like that. They understand our priorities as well as community.”
Career opportunities and job hiring will be offered closer to the facility’s launch date.
