State Police are reminding drivers of large commercial trucks and 18-wheelers that driving through the I-20 construction zone in Bossier City is off limits. Department of Transportation and Development Spokesperson Erin Buchanan says accidents involving large trucks have increased on that stretch of highway that is already reduced to one lane.
“They have all been minor as in no major injuries, no fatalities, or anything like that but we still are mostly seeing incidents involving 18 wheelers that are not even suppose to be in the work zone to begin with.”
In December 2023, a ban went into effect to keep large trucks from driving through the construction zone.
Buchanan says law enforcement have issued more than 200 warnings and citations. She says there are plenty of signs in the area…
“They’re ignoring it. It’s not a lack of signage. These are on our large digital message boards. This is not a small static sign we’re talking about. They’re placed all over as you enter the work zone on either end of it in both Shreveport and Bossier.”
Concrete barriers were added as a safety precaution to prevent drivers from leaving the travel lane and entering the area where lanes are actively being removed and reconstructed.
As work continues, Buchanan says drivers of oversize loads should remain vigilant while driving through Bossier between Hamilton Road and Industrial Drive. She encourages truck drivers to use the I-220 detour help keep everyone safe.
“Taking that loop number one avoids getting stuck in congestion. Number two avoids the issues with getting in a crash potentially and improve safety for everyone.”
