New Iberia Senator Blake Miguez has pre-filed legislation for the regular session to clarify that it will be legal to conceal carry a firearm in a restaurant that serves alcohol. The Republican lawmaker says this bill gives gun owners the ability to protect themselves.
“Some of the most precious time you can spend with your family, especially working class family from my district, is going take your family eat out. And I think individuals should have the right to defend themselves and their loved ones when they’re going out to a restaurant and eating out.”
Miguez says the bill prohibits conceal carry in bars where more than 50 percent of its sale is alcohol. And all the current safeguards in the law would remain.
“You can’t be under the influence of alcohol when you’re carrying a firearm, you can’t be drinking alcohol, and you can’t be acting in a negligent manner.”
Miguez says the measure aims to make sure there’s an even set of rules for all gun owners.
“And the way may constitutional carry bill is written is all the restrictive places and how you’re restricted from carrying a firearm are the same for constitutional carry as concealed carry with a permit.”
The bill will be heard in the three month long regular session that begins next week.
