Governor Landry signed several bills today approved in the crime special session. One of the new laws expands Louisiana’s death penalty methods and seals the records of how the state obtains drugs to carry out a lethal injection. Landry says this legislation will allow the state to re-start executions and this should serve as a deterrent to prevent brutal murders.
“To let them know in a peaceful civilization, these are not the types of conduct and acts that are going to be tolerated here in the state of Louisiana.”
Landry also signed the permitless conceal carry bill which will go into effect on July 4th. The New Orleans Police Department has expressed concerns this law will make it more difficult on law enforcement as they try to reduce gun violence. But Landy disagrees and says 27 other states have similar laws.
“For those of y’all who are critical of this, who claim this bill in some kind of way is going to deter law enforcement – it’s not. Because it doesn’t deter law enforcement in Tennessee. It doesn’t deter in Mississippi, or Arkansas, or in Texas.”
Landry also signed legislation eliminates parole, limits good-time credit and post-conviction relief opportunities. Critics say this will increase the state’s prison population and costing the state more money to house prisoners. But the governor says criminals are already costing the state billions.
“The cost of crime in just Shreveport, Baton Rouge, and New Orleans have cost the state – those cities and our citizens six billion dollars a year.”
