After his sister in Texas was poisoned by her soon-to-be ex-husband who used the abortion-inducing medication, misoprostol, and was only sentenced to 180 days in Texas, Shreveport Senator Thomas Pressly is introducing legislation to change that in Louisiana. He said people who do something should be held accountable.
“Under the bill, it would provide imprisonment of hard labor for not less than five nor more than 10 years, as well as a fine. At least $10,000 and no more than $75,000,” said Pressly.
The bill is referred to as the Abortion by Fraud Criminalization Act.
He said with the help of an abortion pill reversal regimen his niece is alive and healthy.
Pressly said Mason Herring’s plea deal that imprisoned him for only six months is unacceptable.
While the state already has penalties against physicians who perform abortions, Pressly said he wants to go a step further and place stiff penalties on those who face similar domestic situations that happened to his sister.
“And we want to make sure that the people if they attempt to induce an abortion to a pregnant woman it’s a similar amount of time, they are sentenced to,” said Pressly.
Louisiana Right to Life issued a statement in support of Senate Bill 276.
