Covington Senator and self-proclaimed Parrothead Patrick McMath wants to designate a portion of U.S. Route 11 in St. Tammany Parish to honor Jimmy Buffett. McMath said when the Margaritaville singer was just starting his musical career he traveled that very highway back and forth to play gigs.
“On one of the routes that he would take was Highway 11 bridge that goes from Slidell to New Orleans East and ultimately into the City of New Orleans which he loved so deeply,” said McMath.
If passed it would be designated as the “Jimmy Buffett ‘Changes in Latitude’ Memorial Crossing.”
McMath said he considers Buffett’s music the soundtrack of his life along with countless other fans. Even though Buffett was born in Mississippi and grew up in Alabama, McMath said the musician had a deep affinity for the Bayou State.
“A love and appreciation for the zest and life and the culture of this great state and particularly the City of New Orleans,” said McMath.
The bill advances from Senate Transportation and when McMath offers Senate Bill 44 to the upper chamber floor, he said he plans to dress accordingly.
“I probably have a little bit bigger presentation when we get to the floor. Might involve a parrot on my shoulder, I don’t know yet,” said McMath.
Buffet passed away on September 1st at the age of 76. The Coral Reefer Band along with special guests will perform a tribute to the late singer at Jazz Fest on Sunday, May 5th.
