It’s St. Patrick’s Day weekend and a lucky one for mudbug fans with another dollar drop in the average price for a pound of crawfish. Crawfish App co-founder Laney King said consumers can expect to pay an average of $6.99 a pound for boiled crawfish this weekend.
“And if you’re getting a sack, for the St. Patrick’s Day parade or just for a weekend boil, you can expect to pay around $4.65 a pound on average. Some retailers are higher, some are lower,” said King.
King said you can find live crawfish for as low as $3.75 a pound on The Crawfish App.
Since the beginning of March, the average price for mudbugs has dropped two dollars a pound. King said prices are down because the supply has finally exceeded consumer demand.
“Consumers simply refuse, or perhaps can’t afford to pay $9, $10 a pound for boiled crawfish. And now that the supply is up, we have to come down on the price in order to sell off the supply,” said King.
King said it’s been a very tough year for the crawfish industry after last summer’s drought and extreme heat severely impacted the crop and prices this season are reflective of the limited supply.
“But at least we’re not looking at $300 for a sack of crawfish like we were just a month ago. We’re looking closer to $140-$150 per sack,” said King.
