The Port Hudson State Historic Site will host its annual reenactment of the Siege of Port Hudson Saturday and Sunday. Park manager, Daniel Goyer says volunteers will stage the Battle of Port Hudson.
“Living historians, reenactors from the south they come and do a little recreation of the Civil War battle.”
Goyer says actors dressed in Union and Confederate military uniforms will act out the 1863 battle. He says visitors can view a portion of Louisiana’s history – the siege.
“Once the confederates here surrendered, it opened up the Mississippi River to the union forces. Union forces got complete control of the Mississippi after this battle took place and split the confederacy into two.”
In addition to the battle re-enactments, there are living history demonstrations, a Civil War-era dance class, and other activities. He suggests bringing ear plugs…
“It’s usually lots of artillery and lots of muskets being fired so it can get loud.”
