LSU women’s basketball coach Kim Mulkey met with reporters on Friday ahead of the Lady Tigers Sweet 16 matchup against UCLA. The first question was about whether she had heard from the Washington Post since threatening to sue them for defamation if a yet to be published article contained any lies about her.
“I did make a statement and that’s all I will comment on at this time, because all I’m focused on is trying to win another basketball game,” said Mulkey.
The next game for the Lady Tigers is Saturday at noon against a Bruins squad that is 27-6. Six-foot-seven sophomore center Lauren Betts leads the team, averaging 15 points and nine rebounds.
Mulkey says Bruins have a lot more than Betts.
“UCLA is loaded at every position, look they are supposed to win the game, they are the two seed, we are the three-seed, but we are not going away, we are going to fight hard,” said Mulkey.
The last team to win back-to-back national championships in women’s basketball is UCONN. They won four in a row from 2013 to 2016.
LSU All-American forward Angel Reese admits there are more expectations on them this year.
“Last year, I was just like we are winning, winning and winning and I’m like ok let’s keep going, let’s keep going, now it’s like we either win or we go home,” said Reese.
LSU guard Flau’jae Johnson says she’s got anxiety and can’t wait to play.
“Our team is just a special team when we all come together, last year it was kind of unexpected, because we were not supposed to win, so now we are trying to build, build on it,” said Johnson.
A win over UCLA could set up a possible rematch of last year’s national championship game against Iowa.
