Officials in St. Tammany Parish say the damage caused by Wednesday’s tornado in Slidell is reminiscent of Hurricane Katrina. Parish President Mike Cooper said there’s significant destruction to homes, commercial buildings, churches, and power poles.
“It was really catastrophic and widespread. I would compare it to Katrina or even Hurricane Ida,” said Cooper.
Cooper said nearby parishes and cities have graciously offered assistance with clean-up and they are asking for volunteers to help residents with removing and sorting construction debris from downed vegetation.
“To restore their yards and move debris to the front. So, there are many needs, and more information will be forthcoming as more help is needed,” said Cooper.
The parish has also set up a distribution point for ice, water, and tarps. As clean-up and damage assessment continue, Cooper said they’ve also declared a parish-wide state of emergency that allows them to mobilize their debris pick-up contractor and more.
“But we’re responding, the city the parish, the state, our sheriff’s office, our fire and emergency personnel are all hands on deck and we’ve been working together to address the needs of our citizens,” said Cooper.
