Louisiana has hit the peak for termite swarm season. LSU Ag Center Entomologist Dr. Aaron Ashbrook says Formosan subterranean termites are attracted to light so keep interior lights off at night to prevent them from coming into your house. Second, termites are looking for leaks in your home.
“Now what will allow them to establish in the home is the moist conditions, whether that’s a leak or some kind of drainage issue that could be contributing to moist wood,” Ashbrook explained.
Ashbrook says these termites are some of the most destructive species we have and they are responsible for billions in damages every year. He says if they get in your home, they love to feast on moist wood as a result of a water leak or drainage issue.
“They consume the structural wood that is used to make homes and buildings, so that is our major concern. Now, of course, they need that moisture and those moist conditions for them to start to feed and establish in an area,” Ashbrook said.
Ashbrook says if you have swarms inside your home that is a concern.
“What you want to do is inspect your home. Look for mud tubes that the termites use to move around, but also look for moist areas that could be collecting water and allow those termites to establish,” Ashbrook said.
