LSU Women’s Basketball announces Hall of Famer Seimone Augustus is joining the staff as an assistant coach. According to Patrick Wright, voice of the Lady Tigers, though Augustus is replacing Johnny Derrick due to his retirement, she is set to fill a much different role.
“She’ll have more of a basketball than Johnny had,” said Wright. “He was more of a Director of Ops [Operations] type person who handled travel and a lot of that stuff.”
Besides coming in with an impressive resume, both at LSU and in the WNBA, Wright says Augustus also has a hometown advantage, adding, “[she’s] a person who’s a big part of the Baton Rouge community, who knows the community well, who knows Louisiana well, who might… who can help recruit Louisiana [players] and help get some of the best players.”
As a player at LSU from 2003 to 2006, Augustus led the Lady Tigers to their first three Final Four appearances and was the first woman in school history to have her jersey retired. After 16 years in the WNBA and three Olympics appearances, Wright says Augustus is the perfect candidate for the role, since “[she’s] working on making everybody around her better, as that’s what she did on and off the floor.”
This is Augustus’ second assistant coaching job after one season with the Los Angeles Sparks of the WNBA.
