State Police is looking for local police officers that want to participate in an accelerated training program that will begin in October. Trooper William Huggins says this program is designed specifically for Louisiana POST certified applicants
“It gives guys who are already out there doing the job the local city PD or the Sheriff’s office, it give them an opportunity if they do want to go become a Louisiana State Trooper.”
Accepted cadets will be part of Cadet Class 105 and for 14 weeks will get advanced State Police training that goes beyond POST requirements in firearm proficiency, de-escalation techniques, lawful use of force and LSP Core Values. This way cadets don’t have to retake POST training they have already received.
“Yes, we are still going to teach them the way Louisiana State Police does their thing, but they are also going enhanced defensive tactics, or driving or crisis intervention. Anything like that they’re still going to get all those things. Its just a shorter academy.”
For those local officers that are interested in applying for the October Class, Huggins says the deadline is July 24th to apply
“If they want to just straight and get the application they just have to go tot eh Louisiana State Police Commission website. To get that application they can download it, fill it in and then submit it electronically to that Louisiana State Police Commission.”
Applicants for Cadet Class 105 must have a Louisiana Level 1 POST certification at the time they submit their application.
