NOAA’s prediction for the 2024 Atlantic Hurricane season in a word is grim. They are forecasting an above-average season with 17 to 25 named storms. Eight to 13 will become hurricanes and 4 to 7 could be major hurricanes. LSU Climatologist Barry Keim said on average there are 14 named storms a season, and…
“An average season produces seven hurricanes. They’re predicting anywhere from eight to 13. An average season produces three major hurricanes, NOAA is predicting four to seven majors,” said Keim.
Keim said a combination of record-warm sea surface temperatures and a La Nina atmosphere, which produces less wind shear, is why NOAA is upping the ante this season…
“So, we have lots of energy, lots of heat, lots of moisture potentially feeding into these storms, into an environment that is very conducive for a storm to form in since there isn’t a lot of shears to try to shear off the top of the hurricanes and weaken them,” said Keim.
