The first phase of SUN Bucks, also known as Summer EBT, is being issued this week. Tim Jenkins with the Department of Children and Family Services said approximately 300,000 children between the ages of five and 18 who received SNAP during the 2023-24 school year will receive $120 on their card.
“So, this is going to be in addition to their SNAP card, it’s on their existing SNAP case, they don’t have to apply, there’s nothing for them to do but to check this week on their existing SNAP case for the money to be loaded,” said Jenkins.
SUN Bucks is a federal program to help provide grocery benefits for eligible families during the summer months when children are not receiving meals at school.
The second phase of Sun Bucks benefits will begin in late July. He said those will include children…
“That’s have received Medicaid, TANF, which is FITAP or Kinship. Or participated in a school that participated in the national school lunch program,” said Jenkins.
Those schools will be sending DCFS information to certify those students.
Phase 3 is for children who attended schools that offered free lunches for all students, but the individual student has not applied for EBT.
“So that will be sometime in August, when we’ll open up that application and that will be for any children that just weren’t able to be certified directly those Phase 1 or Phase 2,” said Jenkins.
