Presidential candidate Donald Trump will address delegates at the Republican National Convention this evening, just days after an assassination attempt on his life. As for what his speech will entail, Speaker of the House Mike Johnson said.
“Well, none of us know, he’s changed his speech as well, and he’s told us a little bit about it, the themes that he’ll be presenting. It’s a unifying message, as he said and I’m very much looking forward to that.”
Johnson addressed delegates Tuesday evening at the convention where the evening’s theme was “Make America Safe Again.” After Saturday’s tragic events in Pennsylvania that also claimed the life of one attendee, and seriously injured two others, Johnson said this convention is emotional.
“What I love about what President Trump is saying right now is that he really sees himself as someone who can unite the country and that ought to be what we’re all about,” said Johnson.
The Benton, Louisiana native said he told Trump that he could become the most consequential president in the nation’s history because Republicans will have to fix every metric of public policy.
“I think he knows that I think he feels the weight of history, we all do. And we’re humbled to be a part of that really important time to save our republic. As Lincoln said the last best hope of man on the earth,” said Johnson.
Trump’s speech will be the culmination of the four-day convention in Milwaukee.
