Two adults and two children were killed in a two-car crash Monday morning on U-S 61 near I-310. 33-year-old Mathieu Christopher of Laplace was struck head-on by 38-year-old Benjamin Alexis of Chalmette driving in the wrong direction. Louisiana State Trooper Jacob Pucheu (pee-shoo)…
“They were driving, for whatever reason, north in the southbound lane and there was another car going south in the southbound lanes, as he should have been, and they crashed head-on.”
Christopher, Alexis, and his two sons, 8-year-old Benjamin Alexis III and 5-year-old Charles Alexis both from Chalmette were killed in the crash. One child is in critical condition. Christopher and Alexis were pronounced dead at the scene.
“All of the children were actually transported and two were pronounced dead at the hospital.”
Pucheu says the children in the car were wearing seatbelts but were not properly restrained in a child car seat or booster seat.
“You know, Louisiana law says you have to be at least nine years old, but you should also hit the height and weight requirements as prescribed by the manufacturers.”
Every Louisiana State Police Troop is a nationally recognized Child Seat Fitting Station. Contact Troop B if you have any questions or would like to ensure your seat is installed correctly.
