New Orleans Representative Aimee Freeman, who was diagnosed with breast cancer last month, said fortunately it was caught early and she’s undergoing treatment. Even though she has annual mammograms, Freeman said she found a lump just after the session ended and quickly contacted her primary care physician and gynecologist.
“So, I highly encourage people to manage their care beyond just once a year mammogram, you have aware of what you might feel in your body and report that to your doctors,” said Freeman.
She said a biopsy confirmed the diagnosis and has already undergone her first round of chemotherapy. Freeman said the treatment regime for the type of breast cancer she has is chemo, surgery, and then radiation.
“I absolutely have faith in the oncologist that I’m working with, Dr. Melanie Sheen, who reminded me to remember that this is your individual unique journey. She specifically reminded me that each patient has their own journey,” said Freeman.
While she expects to be in treatment for 10 months to a year, Freeman said she will continue to work as much as possible and represent her district. When she’s unable to attend neighborhood and committee meetings her legislative assistant will keep her updated.
Freeman encourages women to have routine mammograms and do monthly self-exams. Because it was detected early, she’s optimistic about her treatment plan. She said it’s important to be an advocate for your care and when you find a lump or notice a change in your breast you talk to your doctor to rule anything out.
“Often times you’ll feel something, and it can lead to something not being cancerous. It’s just important that you are aware and making those checks yourself and checking in with your medical team,” said Freeman.
