Jimmy Genovese (Gen-o-vez) was introduced today as the 21st president of Northwestern State. Genovese was the lone finalist for the job to replace Doctor Marcus Jones. Genovese left the Supreme Court as a judge to lead his alma mater and he’s amazed at the support he’s received.
“I’ve never had any type of outpouring of support like this and it’s just overwhelming. I’ve had difficulty sleeping at night,” Genovese said.
Genovese has been an attorney or a judge during his adult life, but he believes he has the experience to run a university. The 74-year-old plans to sell Northwestern State as a great place to continue their education.
“How many people know what kind of nursing program we have? The teachers that we produce in the education department? The performing arts? How many people know that we have people that come from this university, that are on Broadway?” Genovese said.
Genovese says he left the as a Louisiana Supreme Court Judge to help out his alma mater, which has seen a reported 22-percent drop in enrollment over the past four years.
“We’re not the only school that has experienced a decline, so don’t panic. We’re going to be ok, alright? We’re going to go ahead and stop the bleeding. We are going to turn this institution around. I am very excited about that,”
Genovese says he plans to put more money towards marketing the university, faculty salaries and he would like to see Northwestern State’s athletic teams be more competitive.
