
Senior Corporal Segus Jolivette
The Lafayette Police Department is mourning the loss of one of its officers, who authorities say was fatally while assisting other officers in a hostage situation.
The deceased officer has been identified as Senior Corporal Segus Jolivette, a husband and a father of five. Jolivette served on the Lafayette PD for nearly 11 years. He was part of a group of officers attempting to execute an arrest warrant.
The Lafayette Police Department Swat Team were called to the town of Jeanerette in Iberia Parish on Thursday morning. Officials say the Jeanerette City Marshals Office asked the SWAT team to assist them in attempting to serve an arrest warrant. The suspect, identified in media reports as 31-year-old Nyjal Hurst, had multiple warrants for his arrest, including aggravated second degree battery, armed robbery and attempted car jacking.
According to KLFY-TV, Hurst barricaded himself inside the home, with two others, including a juvenile.
The Lafayette Police Department says during the operations, the suspect fired multiple shots at law enforcement. Four Lafayette Police officers were injured. Two officers were shot, and bullet fragments struck the other two officers.
As a result of the shooting, an Senior Corporal Segus Jolivette was killed in the line of duty. The other three officers are currently in good condition., with non-life threatening injuries.
Hurst was eventually arrested after an hours long hostage situation.
“I am deeply saddened to share the news of the recent loss of one of our cherished community members and a devoted officer of the Lafayette Police Department,” Lafayette Mayor-President Monique Boulet said. “This rare and tragic even brings us great sadness and grief. Our hearts go out to the officer’s family, friends, and colleagues during this incredibly difficult time.”
“Senior Corporal Segus Jolivette died a hero,” Police Association of Lafayette President Charles Broussard. “He was a father, husband, son, brother, uncle and friend. He was exceptional in every way and courageous in every action he undertook. He was a wonderful human being. We will honor his sacrifice. We will never forget what he did and how he served the people of Lafayette and Acadiana.”
