Passenger rail service from New Orleans to Mobile is closer to getting on track, as soon as February 2025. Chair of the Southern Rail Commission Knox Ross said Amtrak and the City of Mobile will begin finalizing the paperwork over the next week so platform work can start in Mobile.
“And it’s going to give folks in New Orleans and south Louisiana a really easy connection to the Mississippi Gulf Coast and Mobile and vice versa and give all of those people a great connection back to downtown New Orleans, said Ross.
And the goal Ross said is to have service up and running in time for the 2025 Superbowl in the Big Easy.
“It’s going to be tough, but we think that’s a real keyway to start this service off right and really enhance the visitor’s experience coming to the Super Bowl,” said Ross.
Since Katrina passenger rail service from New Orleans to Jacksonville was destroyed. Ross said they’ve been working on reinstating it ever since. Ross said rail service to Mobile and other Gulf cities in between would have rail service twice daily, morning and night.
“You could come into the city for the day, say you live in Biloxi and want to go do some stuff in New Orleans, you can ride the train over have lunch, do your shopping, do your business, go back home,” said Ross.
Stops in between New Orleans and Mobile will include Gulfport, Biloxi, and Pascagoula.
